Excerpts from the talk of Prof.Ananth, Director, IIT Madras

ICT to come to education’s rescue: bring unlike minds together

I have come to talk about Saraswathi (the Goddess of learning) when there are fervent talks going on amidst us about Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth), begins Prof.Ananth with a chuckle that is typical of him.

His talk:

Whereas Industry thrives on differences, a University works the best, only on oneness!
When we talk about concentrating on content, I want you all to evaluate (in mass education) what you communicate. Education takes a lot of time to sink in!

India demands lots on education, needs more teachers. To retain them, it is inevitable to understand the importance of the profession, and of course, pay them more! When it comes to such a vast country as India, the Brick-and-mortar model of education doesn’t work. So, the ICT model is needed. Technologically enhanced learning, communication through animations, wikis, such wonderful possibilities of clearing doubts across geographies and responses between peers as threads… Connect online! We need Universities, the industry and government to come together. Optimistically, things do happen finally in India. I hope to see a virtual university in 3 years. We have lots of things to share towards building our nation. And government officials, stop interfering where you should not when it comes to education!
As for manufacturing, innovate to be competitive, try all best practices to extract the best in yourself and shine through: magic garden approach, the idea factory approach or any other innovative approach towards problem solving. All problems need interdisciplinary approach. Bring ‘unlike’ people together. Provide connectivity where physical proximity can’t be met,

And of course, there is the evergreen ‘trial and error’ approach. There is nothing wrong to fail and learn no hard and fast rules in life. Keep being positive!

I will end my speech with this statement: God made the world; Engineers make what the good Lord forgot to make.

Evaluation of intuitive part of a person can’t be done. But then, you might ask, what does a University does? Simple! It makes you understand what you know already!
